The Gunnison National Forest is a U.S. national forest covering 1,672,136 acres (2,612.71 sq mi, or 6,766.89 km2) in Mesa, Gunnison, Hinsdale and Saguache Counties in Western part of Colorado. Gunnison County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located on Colorado's Western Slope. The County was created on March 9, 1877 and was named for John Williams Gunnison. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,918. Both the county seat and the largest city is Gunnison.
